Un regard sarcastique, mais assez bon enfant, sur l'ambition et le succès des jeunes groupes de rock. Les paroles se moquent des formations comme les Monkees, manufacturées et assemblées avant même que leurs membres ne sachent réellement jouer de leurs instruments.

Le single aviaire est probablement un des plus vieils exemples de pop anti-pop, témoin d'une certaine inquiétude face au devenir du rock en une usine à tubes et stars.

Sell your soul to the company
Who are waiting there to sell plastic ware
And in a week or two if you make the charts

The girls'll tear you apart

Dans Dialectique de la pop (2018), Agnès Gayraud affirme que cet arrière-goût amer tient à l'heureuse et vicieuse convergence entre un art qui place toute sa confiance dans l'incarnation et l’intérêt d'une industrie qui vend à tour de bras de la « personnalité ». Et ces commodités comptent finalement davantage que la musique dont elles ne sont plus que le prétexte.

L'esthétique pop vise certes la popularité qui rend ses représentants célèbres, mais cette célébrité trahit quelque chose de l’incarnation pop : elle rend substantiel ce qui dans le génie démocratique tenait à des intermittences. (...) A la fin, l'originalité n'en est plus que l'accessoire reconnaissable et dispensable d'une personnalité.

Roger McGuinn précisa finalement quelques années plus tard : 

In fact, it isn't as bitter as that. We were thumbing through a teen magazine and looking at all the unfamiliar faces and we couldn't help thinking: "Wow, what's happening … all of a sudden here is everyone and his brother and his sister-in-law and his mother and even his pet bullfrog singing rock 'n' roll." So we wrote "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" to the audience of potential rock stars, those who were going to be, or who wanted to be, and those who actually did go on to realize their goals.

A noter que Michael Nesmith des Monkees avait écrit (avant le casting) une chanson de rupture, où l'un des partenaires choisit la liberté et l'indépendance, et qui peut être lue sous un angle métapop. Voici la version tubesque par The Stone Poneys (september 1967).
